applications
FLUSTRIN is today's most advanced program for predicting and analysing fluid transients, caused by valve closure, pump trip and pipe burst, taking into account the effects of fluid-structure interaction due to deformation and movement of pipelines. It is a most accurate and unique tool for verifying the structural integrity of pipeline systems, optimising these systems, and determining the operational limits of pumps, valves, other components and the pipeline itself for different fluids in:
- nuclear power plants
- process systems
- oil loading lines
- liquified-gas pipelines
- fire-fighting systems
- hazardous chemicals transport lines
in the design stage as well as later stages, such as capacity increase and rehabilitation.
purpose
FLUSTRIN's main purpose is to accurately compute hydrodynamic and structural behaviour of above-ground pipeline systems in which large loading conditions may occur. The program offers the designer a maximised understanding of the economics (pressure class, strength of supports) as well as the safety aspects (margin) of the pipeline system.
accuracy
The accuracy of the results of the analyses depends on the spational and temporal resolutions chosen and also on the accuracy and degree of definition of the component characteristics.
The program has been extensively validated using previously-published and established/accepted test procedures, as well as via test results obtained from a large scale test rig at Deltares.

The pipeline system can be easily graphically schematised by selecting and defining pipes and components. The following hydraulic components are incorporated in FLUSTRIN:
- pipes
- valves
- check valves
- pumps
- air vessels (vertical and horizontal, vented and non-vented)
- surge towers
- reservoirs
- local pressure losses (resistances)
- rupture discs
The following 'pure' structural components are included in the FLUSTRIN model:
- prescribed displacements

- dampers
- external forces and moments
- lumped masses, including rotaniol inertia
presention of calculation results
Graphical and tabular presentation of extreme values (distance graphs), time histories (time graphs) and variation of spatial functions with time (animation) of:
- pressures/heads
- discharges/flow velocities
- component-specific output (pump speeds, valve position, etc.)
- displacements/velocities/accelerations
- support forces and moments
- internal forces and moments
- principal and equivalent stresses (Tresca, von Mises)
