wave dynamics & structures

Dikes, dunes and seawalls form the major line of defence to protect economic value and human lives against extreme storm surges at sea. Deltares has many years of experience in the design of water defences and the research on the physical processes involved, such as the assessment of the hydraulic load on and the strength of the sea defence structure.

Our specialists on wave dynamics and structures offer specialist advice and applied research in the field of wave modelling and the conceptual design and testing of coastal structures such as breakwaters, dikes and dunes.

Our cost-effective solutions are supported by expert opinions, mathematical tools and results from high-quality experimental facilities measurements in wave flumes and wave basins.

R&D

Our clients benefit from our research that underpins the technology which supports our advice on wave dynamics and structures. Research is often carried out in close co-operation with private companies, as well as educational and scientific institutes, such as e.g. European HYDRALAB programme, NCK and Delft Cluster.

If you are interested in the results of our latest R&D projects, look at our R&D site for Hydrodynamics and Hydraulic Engineering or download the annual R&D-reports.

The applied research projects for the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management has given us the opportunity to develop the major design methods for the Dutch water defences. Therefore we are especially aware of the basic physical processes involved, and we can provide our clients with more than just the computational results of our models.
software

Our software products for wave modelling and structure design are based on high-quality data-sets from laboratory investigations and the validation and applications in consultancy practice. Deltares ’ reputation and decades long experience are a guarantee for the high quality of these user-friendly software packages.

  • BREAKWAT: Design tool for breakwaters and rock revetments
  • ANAMOS: Design tool for placed block revetments
  • Neural Network for wave overtopping: Wave overtopping prediction tool for coastal structures (dikes and breakwaters)
  • Delft-AUKE: wave generation software for wave facilities and analysis of measurements·
  • TRITON: Accurate and efficient numerical modelling of the dynamics of surface waves in shallow coastal regions and harbours (Boussinesq-type wave model)·
  • SKYLLA wave interaction modelling with coastal structures (VOF model)·
  • Scatter-SWAN: Spectral wave model (SWAN) to determine statistical analysis of waves in coastal areas (Scatter). This software package is useful for wave climate studies
facilities

The following experimental facilities to assess project-specific information on waves, currents and/or morphodynamics are frequently used:

Scheldt flume: small scale wave flume
  • breakwater design (wave overtopping, armour stability, wave forces) (link naar Badalona)
  • dikes (run-up, overtopping, stability)
  • jetties (wave forces on deck and piles)
  • scour problems around structures

Vinjé basin: small scale multi-directional wave basin

  • breakwater heads (wave overtopping, armour stability, wave forces) (link naar La Coruna)
  • wave agitation into harbours (Marina Calheta)
  • jetties (wave forces on deck and piles)
  • moored ship studies

Scheldt basin: small scale wave basin with flow capacities

  • breakwater heads (wave overtopping, armour stability, wave forces) (link naar La Coruna)
  • scour measurements around offshore structures (link naar projectbeschrijving scour around offshore constructies)
  • wave-current interactions

Delta flume: large scale wave flume to measure wave loads on structures. This facility is also used in projects where scale effects can be expected, e.g. stability of placed block revetments and dune erosion.
