Seagrass restoration efforts around the world are on the rise. An ever-increasing host of tools and techniques are on offer, from fancy to practical, and from commercial to scientific. The costs of seagrass restoration programmes are often very high. Unfortunately, there are as many failures as there are successes.

Deltares can assist coastal managers with the design of a professional, result-oriented approach to seagrass restoration that is based on practical experience and knowledge of the ecosystem.

We can offer independent specialist advice and technical assistance for the successful restoration, mitigation and recovery of seagrass meadows following their degradation or loss. We can assist in the selection of suitable sites and techniques for seagrass restoration and assist in setting up a restoration plan. We have broad experience in carrying out cost-benefit analyses and environmental impact assessments. We can also provide specialist advice on measures that can be taken to encourage recovery and natural regeneration of seagrasses.

In partnership with the Florida-based Seagrass Expert Group, Inc and the World Seagrass Association, of which we are active members, we can assist with the implementation and monitoring of large-scale seagrass restoration programmes, and in the evaluation of restoration programmes carried out by others.
