marine ecology and policy analysis

Managers operating in marine and estuarine environments are increasingly aware of the magnitude and extent of the impacts of their activities upon the ecology. They need to instigate actions for the conservation, mitigation and/or rehabilitation of the marine ecosystem and its associated habitats.

Ecosystems are very dynamic and are influenced by both natural events and human activities. As prevention is better than cure, it is important that in the earliest stages of project development, all aspects controlling the system are considered. In addition to knowledge of physical, chemical and biological properties of the ecosystem, attention must also be paid to societal aspects, including economics, safety, public participation, policy-making and legislation.

New developments and infrastructure may result in some loss of habitat but may also create opportunities for new habitats. Well-designed infrastructure may even enhance ecological diversity. The effects of interactions with the environment must subsequently be monitored in order to quantify the effects of our activities, to better understand the ecosystem dynamics, to ascertain compliance with predefined objectives, and to take remedial action if necessary.

The Marine Ecology and Policy Analysis group within the Marine and Coastal Management department provides knowledge and expertise on wide-scale environmental management issues and integrated ecosystem analysis in marine, estuarine and coastal environments.

Our group’s specialist advice ranges from impact assessment studies to the design and implementation of frameworks for decision-support and policy making in coastal and marine areas. Multidisciplinary expertise is coupled with state-of-the-art information technology to provide appropriate tools for policy making and decision support. Transfer of knowledge, training and institutional support are also important activities.
