Wherever natural systems and human activities co-exist in the coastal environment, conflicts of interest are inevitable. There are innumerable examples in the world where competition between human goals and natural processes lead to major challenges. The Coastal Morphodynamics and Mud Management group within the Marine and Coastal Management department specialises in consultancy and research projects concerning the morphological development of sea bottoms, coasts, tidal inlets, lagoons and estuaries.
Our group's area of interest extends from the coastal zone, including the adjacent sea bed, into the bordering tidal inlets and lagoons. Our group's research efforts are mostly (but not uniquely) directed towards and initiated by conditions in the
Netherlands
and
Europe
, whilst our consultancy projects are carried out throughout the world.

To fulfill its task the Coastal Morphodynamics & Mud Management group has a number of tools at its disposal, amongst which are various state of the art computer based models (e.g. the Delft3D suite, the profile model UNIBEST-TC and the coastline model UNIBEST-CL), several advanced experimental facilities (flumes, basins, testing devices) and a wide array of field survey equipment (including the ARGUS remote sensing system). A great deal of the group's activities is focused upon the constant scientific advancement within the disciplines and further development of our specialist support tools. We are actively engaged in applying and improving these tools and in assisting clients all over the world to do the same.
